Preparing Clients for Extension Services

Prepare the client

  • The client’s scalp must be checked for cuts, abrasions and signs of infection or infestation. Question the client about their hair to find out whether they have a history of any form of alopecia or whether contraindications (such as weak hair, or open wounds) are present.
  • The client must be informed of the duration of the hair extension service, which will depend on their requirements and the density of their hair. They must also be informed of the cost of the service before you begin hair extension services are costly, especially when you are dealing with real hair, rather than synthetic hair.
  • As part of the client’s preparation, you must ensure they are fully aware of the maintenance of the extensions they are undertaking. This includes products and tools they will need to purchase.
  • It’s important to stress to the client to dry the hair completely before applying any heat. Ensure the hair extensions are completely dry. In addition to using a blow dryer, it may also be best for clients to sit under the hooded dryer to ensure the hair is completely dry. This is especially important if the hair extensions are woven into the client’s actual hair. If the hair extensions are wet for too long after washing, parts of the client’s hair will also be wet. The moisture buildup can lead to mildew and scalp damage. Inform clients that lukewarm water is best for hair extensions and that they should wash their hair and extensions at least once a week if they sweat.
  • Where possible, make sure the client is sitting in a hydraulic styling chair so you can move them up and down as you progress through the service. Check your client’s comfort throughout the service.
  • Finally, before the service commences, re-confirm with your client the look agreed.

Throughout the service and at the end, you must provide your client with aftercare advice and any recommendations on the service you have provided, such as:

  • How to maintain the attachment systems – including products and equipment to use, what to and what not to do to their hair
  • Time intervals between services – when to return for maintenance and when to have the extensions removed. If they are temporary short-term extensions, remind your client on how to remove them and store them for future use at home.
  • Present and future services that will benefit your client and help to maintain the hair’s condition and style. Like a steam or deep conditioning treatment, a trim, colour, or updo services.

Be sure to remind your clients that human hair extensions should be taken care of the same way they would care for their actual hair. Synthetic hair doesn’t last as long and may need to be washed and maintained differently. Some synthetic extensions have specific washing instructions, so be sure to follow these directions so the synthetic extensions will look as attractive as possible for as long as possible.

Extension-ready hair is:

  1. clean
  2. flake-free
  3. dry to the touch
  4. tangle-free – key for keeping the hair manageable during the installation
  5. smooth (not brittle)
  6. reasonably full, long, and sturdy – the hair has to be strong and healthy enough to bear the added weight of the extensions

It’s important that your client’s hair is in the proper condition come installation time-partly because less-than-ready hair will make the installation process more difficult, but mostly because installing on such hair will risk premature slippage, unnecessary breakage, or even shedding of the natural hair. If the hair is flaky, greasy, or generally unclean, the extension bond will not establish a sufficiently secure grip, and slippage will become more likely. If the hair is tangled during install or unusually brittle, the hair extension installation will cause breakage. If the hair is not strong or full enough to handle extensions, then the hair extension installation will cause shedding.

It is not necessary for the client to straighten their natural hair for an installation, but if they decide to do so, ensure that they do not use any heat protectant on the root area of their hair. Be sure to cover all of these steps during the consultation phase of the hair extension installation process so that your client knows what to expect. And get a good look at the client’s hair during the consultation, too.
