When trauma, injury or disease occurs in dark skin the melanocytes will do one of two things during the healing process.
- Hyperpigmentaion – the skin will produce more melanin, creating darker pigmented areas
- Hypopigmentaion – the skin will stop producing pigment leaving a white area.
Another issue that is more prone to darker skin is the risk of hypertrophic scars keloids, which are an over production of scar tissue that forms a bulbous formation on the skin and spread beyond the trauma site.
If the client is prone to keloid scarring (both darker and lighter skin) that person should not get any permanent makeup procedures including lip blushing.
